ETHICS STATEMENT

The Ancestry Guy acts with and exercises the highest professional standards as set forth in the Code of Ethics of the Association of Professional Genealogists as well as the guidelines of the National Genealogical Society’s Standards For Sound Genealogical Research.

Using the best practices for genealogy, The Ancestry Guy diligently attempts to come as close as possible to what actually happened in history.

Additionally, The Ancestry Guy pledges to act in every way to protect the public, clients (whether paying or pro bono), and the genealogical community and profession.

In order to reach a sound conclusion, the following five points of reference shall be used:

1. Reasonably exhaustive research.
2. Complete and accurate source citations.
3. Thorough analysis and correlation.
4. Resolution of conflicting evidence.
5. Sound written conclusion based on the strongest evidence.

In terms of research, the following three points of reference shall be used:

  1. All research will be planned and conducted with a focused question seeking to be answered by consulting relevant sources in a logical order, while maintaining flexibility in case of surprises
  2. Collecting data that shall include but not limited to note-taking, image capture, transcribing, abstracting, quoting, paraphrasing, and separating comments from the source information—all done with careful handling of the materials and respect for archivists and archives
  3. Reason with the evidence taking into account the need be accurate and to seek the best available evidence; shun ill-founded assumptions; and draw conclusions only after carefully assessing the evidence and resolving any conflicts.
